Margot Robbie has been slammed online for her starring role in the latest version of the acclaimed novel Wuthering Heights, currently being filmed in the UK.

The 34-year-old is set to play the young heroine of the famed book, alongside fellow Australian star Jacob Elordi.

After a series of snaps of the Barbie actress on set went viral last week, fans appeared outraged over Margot’s casting claiming the Hollywood beauty is ‘wrong’ for the part.

The pictures show Margot playing the lead character of Catherine, outfitted in a stunning off-the-shoulder dress that featured a voluminous skirt.

She also wears a veil and has her beautiful blonde locks in an artful braid.

Taking to X fans have moaned that Margot and her handsome co-star will ‘ruin’ the famed 18th century novel by Emily Brontë, which has been filmed many times over the last 100 years.

‘I barely read anymore but Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books and the book I ALWAYS came back to and…Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are RUINING it,’ one X said, adding: ‘I hate them so bad!’

Sharing Margot in her costume from the set to an X thread about the new film, another user complained:

‘Margot Robbie fans need to be quiet about that stupid Wuthering Heights adaptation before I blow up,’ moaned another X user.

‘And when you think things can’t get any worse here comes Margot Robbie în Wuthering Heights,’ posted another angry literary enthusiast.

Meanwhile, some fans have detailed their objections to Margot’s casting of the tragic character, saying the Australian-born star is too old for the role.

Readers commonly understand that Margot’s character Cathy is no more than 19, though her exact age is never spelt out in the novel.

‘Look at this 17-year-old teenager in 1783,’ one online user said after sharing Margot’s on set snaps.

Meanwhile, Heathcliff, whose character is about 40 by the end of the story, will be portrayed by 27-year-old Elordi. Meanwhile, Heathcliff, whose character is about 40 by the end of the story, will be portrayed by 27-year-old Elordi.

Other users appeared to attack the filmmakers for their styling of Margot, believing the look as seen in the leaked pH๏τos is not ‘right’ for a story set in the 18th century.

‘Oh yes, the highlights and the tan scream 1700s,’ whined one fan.

First published in 1847, the beloved novel focuses on the character of Heathcliff and his doomed love for the beautiful Catherine.

Heathcliff is one of the most infamous and complex romantic heroes in Western literature, known for his brooding nature and obsession with Cathy.

There have been a number of film adaptions of the book over the years, with perhaps the most well known being the 1939 version directed by William Wyler, and starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier.

The most recent adaption is the 2011 film by Andrea Arnold, starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.

Scodelario was just 19 at the time.

Fans of the novel also mocked the decision to use actors who they felt ‘look like they belong on Instagram’ in a period film set in the 1800s.

Some even questioned whether director Emerald Fennell, 38, who also directed Saltburn, had actually read Emily Brontë’s classic novel.

Additionally, there was backlash over the perceived ‘whitewashing’ of Heathcliff, a character often described as ‘dark-skinned’ and subjected to racist abuse.

In the book, Heathcliff—considered one of literature’s most complex romantic figures—is portrayed with dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin, with many readers believing he has Roma or Gypsy heritage.
